Alessandro Mitola “The design approach that led us to imagine Design Kiosk was inspired by the typical newsstand kiosks scattered around Italy, which everyone can recognize immediately. Our goal was to perpetuate their tradition but also to run them through the contemporary essence of the Salone del Mobile, combining the values conveyed by the identity of a symbolic location in Milan – Piazza della Scala – with the iconic impact of a newsstand that is vaguely reminiscent of a spaceship,” comment Frederik De Wachter and Alberto Artesani. “With its aluminum casing and bright red interiors, which link back to the event’s institutional color, the kiosk stands out as a symbol of innovation and sustainability. In fact, as regards the latter in particular, we extended our focus beyond the choice of the right materials. We designed the kiosk to maximize its reuse potential in a variety of contexts. This entailed ensuring it will be easy to put together and pull apart, giving it flexibility and longevity across its lifespan. By prioritizing adaptability and minimizing waste, we created a design that works for its immediate purpose and also can be reused later, generating a positive impact on the environment.” The initiative will run leading up to and throughout the week of the Fair, with events always held from 6pm to line up with the closing time of the Salone in Rho Fiera. Each session will hinge on conversations with Italian and international designers, magazine directors and writers, book authors and curators, with a strong focus on the design industry. In addition, Design Kiosk is meant to offer tourist and visitor information, thanks to the Progetto Accoglienza students who, throughout the week, will hand out city maps and help everyone find their way.
