Furniture bonus 2024: a useful guide
A practical guide for the purchase of furniture and large household appliance. Here is how to apply for the new incentives and under which conditions
The budget manoeuvre for 2024 has confirmed the bonuses for furniture and household appliances that will remain active until the end of the year.
Furniture bonus 2024: how it works
The furniture bonus is, in fact, a personal income tax deduction for the purchase of furniture and large household appliances intended to furnish a property undergoing renovation. The deduction, which is obtained by declaring the expenses incurred in your tax return, can be claimed up to a maximum amount of 5,000 euros for 2024, including any transport and installation costs, and will be split into ten annual instalments of equal amounts.
How to pay
Particular attention should be paid to the payment process, also with regard to transport and assembly costs: in order to qualify for the bonus, payments must be made by bank transfer or debit or credit card but not by bank cheque, cash or other payment methods. Furniture and household appliances can also be paid for in instalments, provided the same methods are used (bank transfers or cards), and copies of all payment receipts must obviously be kept.
Qualifying furniture and household appliances
New furniture and household appliances purchased by 31st December 2024 will qualify for the furniture bonus. The categories set out by the Tax Office include beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bookcases, desks, tables, chairs, bedside tables, sofas, armchairs, sideboards, mattresses and lighting appliances. Purchases of doors, flooring (parquet, for instance), curtains and drapes, and other furnishing accessories are excluded. When it comes to large household appliances, the law limits the benefit to the purchase of those carrying energy rating labels (no lower than Class A for ovens, Class E for washing machines, washer-dryers and dishwashers and Class F for fridges and freezers), acquired in relation to building work carried out as of 1st January of the year prior to that in which the goods were purchased. The purchase of large household appliances without energy rating labels will only qualify if these are not yet obligatory for these particular types of appliances. Large household appliances also include electric stoves, electric hot plates, microwave ovens, electric heating appliances, electric radiators, electric fans and air conditioning appliances.
Renovations
As explained above, you can only take advantage of the bonus if the start date of the renovation work on the property is earlier than the date on which the expenses for the purchase of furniture and large appliances are incurred. Furthermore, the 5,000-euro ceiling for 2024 applies to one single housing unit only (outbuildings included) or to the common parts of buildings undergoing renovation. This means that those carrying out renovation work on several housing units will be entitled to the benefit several times.
