“Milan is gearing up for the 60th edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, scheduled for 7th to 12th June at Fiera Milano Rho, with the press conference on 16th March 2022 summoning the world to design to Milan’s Teatro Lirico – fresh from the renovation efforts that allowed it to open its doors after 20 years – and streamed live,” says Elle Decor Italia. This was the first time the Salone press conference had been streamed live and it is now available for users to watch at any point. Since the last one, in 2019, times – or rather the way we meet – have changed and this is why the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022 “will address prime themes of restarting, adapting, sustainability, ecological transition and the future of living within its much-anticipated programme” – as the Indian magazine Stir World reports - “Mindful of its lengthy, impactful history, this year it will celebrate its important milestone of completing 60 editions, after two stormy years impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with a message of looking ahead. It is essentially, a “blank canvas” for its protagonists, allowing them a stage to showcase their identities, promote their content and tell their stories, as a point of reference for the entire design community.”

“A connection with the city” – adds Spain’s Fuera de Serie – “reflected in the speech by Giuseppe Sala, the city’s mayor, who emphasised that despite the ‘unfortunate point in history,’ people [were] looking forward to ‘the most important week of the year, with its all-encompassing energy that will fire up the whole city.” On the subject of the current global problems, the British magazine Dezeen reports that the “Salone del Mobile parent company Federlegno Arredo is working with the UN World Food Programme to make a donation to help Ukraine, Porro revealed at the press conference. 'It's a donation from Salone del Mobile and Federlegno through Federlegno Arredo Eventi and we already know that a lot of furniture brands will join us', Porro said.” Moebelmarkt also quotes Maria Porro: “the Salone del Mobile has always been a catalyst for creativity, positivity and energy. We have always been a place of dialogue and construction, both in Milan and at the Shanghai and Moscow editions. Now we are just as shocked as anyone about the war in Ukraine and believe even more in the importance of being a crossroads of cultures and styles, open to the world.”

Interni reports:“The press conference showed that something has changed during the two-year enforced halt. Even though at first glance everything might seem the same. What’s new about the Salone del Mobile 2022, the first with a woman, Maria Porro, at the helm? Greater simplicity, greater immediacy – and a realistic mood, a mixture of satisfaction with the performance of the furnishing sector in 2021 (49 billion turnover and a 9.4% increase in exports) and concern over the war in Ukraine, which will have as-yet unknown repercussions on the cost of raw materials and energy.”

“The 2022 edition of Salone del Mobile will have a strong focus on sustainability,” says the British Wallpaper* Magazine - “developed through a series of guidelines sent to all exhibitors. These include employing upcycled or reusable materials (such as wood), low-environmental-impact or FSC- or PEFC-certified materials; considering the logistical sustainability of the supply sources, and employing environmentally safe products and equipment. Participating companies will endeavour to keep waste of resources and materials to a minimum during processes of building and dismantling, following principles of adaptability and disassembly for reuse.”

The web page of the weekly magazine Living, discusses the latest information on this edition, quoting Salone President Maria Porro, who underscored the urgent need for an ecological transition within the furnishing sector, starting with the “large project on sustainability designed by Mario Cucinella, an installation [Design with Nature, Ed.] in S.Project’s Pavilion 15, conceived as a ‘virtuous ecosystem’ that will trigger and accelerate a process of change with regard to the environment around us.”

“The Salone del Mobile.Milano is repositioning itself with a lot of fresh spirit and commitment,” – Stylepark underscores - “This includes adapting previous successful concepts to current challenges, such as the formats 'Workplace 3.0' as a think tank for the new way of working, EuroCucina/ FTK – Technology For the Kitchen for the efficient equipping of kitchens as the interactive heart of the home, as well as the International Bathroom Ambience Fair, whose offerings will know how to combine a wellness atmosphere with sustainable water conservation.”

Interior Fashion adds that: “more than 600 participants will also be represented at the 23rd SaloneSatellite. The theme this time is 'Designing for our Future Selves'. This year's event calls for thinking about a sustainable and inclusive design that favors autonomy, comfort, movement, usability, interaction and safety for everyone. For this purpose, the Salone Satellite is also renewing its layout, which emphasizes this event as a promoter of new relationships between the international design schools, young people, the new startups and the world of production.”

“Lastly, a calendar of Talks will be back – enriching the event with conversations and debates held by the most exciting voices on the contemporary design scene – curated by Chiara Alessi, Maria Cristina Didero, and Beatrice Leanza” - reported Domus, while the “celebrations for the sixtieth anniversary, represented by six posters signed by the illustrator Emiliano Ponzi, will then continue in the city center with the project ‘The Magic Box’, a film installation curated by Davide Rampello at Palazzo Reale: from 7 June in the Sala delle Cariatidi 11 auteur films will be screened starting from as many key words that represent the symbols of the event in a series of short films made by names such as Francesca Archibugi, Pappi Corsicato or Donato Carrisi” - concludes Living.
