Outdoor kitchens are the new frontier of open air living, thanks to cutting edge materials and technological solutions

The garden barbecues and grills of the past are now but a distant memory. EuroCucina 2024 sent a clear signal that one of the trends being channelled by the top kitchen and outdoor furnishing sector brands is outdoor kitchens, often modular and hyper-equipped systems. In terms of performance, the new proposals have nothing to envy the operational working environments of starred chefs, thanks to materials such as stainless steel and porcelain stoneware for the countertops and latest generation technological solutions. Encompassing ovens, barbecues, induction hobs, fryers and even mixology stations and sinks, the equipment fleshes out an engrossingly large catalogue with plug-and-play installations of facilitated connections to water and electricity networks.

Style is overwhelmingly essential, tending deliberately towards simplification. Outdoor kitchens are designed to integrate seamlessly with the natural environment, chiming with the various interior styles of homes, creating a continuum between indoor and outdoor that serves to extend the liveable spaces and conviviality.

Smeg has aimed for modularity and safety, reinterpreting its barbecue in a contemporary key with a new electric model. Taking the grill as the basic model, the system can be customised, with a choice of single, double or triple plates, depending on the piece of furniture into which it is to be fitted. An insulated double tank and a double-walled lid guarantee optimal heat dispersion and allow for cooking in total safety, minimising the risk of scalding and damage to the furniture in which the barbecue is inserted. The enamelled and removable lid’s magnetic attachment system provides stability when open, making it ideal for use on boats.

Modularity is also the focus of Fògher’s thinking, as exemplified by the Agher kitchen, named after the acer on the Dolomites where the brand’s premises are located. Like the acer, it integrates majestically with nature, the two holes at the sides of the MDI (Minerals Design Innovation) countertop can be customised according to need, with gas or induction hobs, stainless steel sinks and practical Corian chopping boards. Agher has been designed (and can be digitally configured on the company’s website) to respond to every sort and kind of need and taste.

Elegant yet amusing and informal, Phil by Ethimo, conceived in collaboration with Gordon Guillaumier, stems from careful reflection on how the outdoor space should be lived, whether it be a portico, a patio, a terrace, beside a swimming pool or on a city balcony. This original piece can make almost every context work, even small ones, allowing the cooking space to be organised simply, practically and speedily. Thanks to contained volumes and innovative technical features, Phil concentrates the primary cooking activities into a small space and ergonomically, guaranteeing maximum functionality, stability and robustness.

Designed together with Studio Delineo and Massimo Rosati, Àtria is the first Abimis project expressly designed for outdoor use, with a stainless steel core that can be combined and customised. Stainless steel is an antibacterial and biologically neutral material, it does not release any substances onto food, it resists corrosion, impacts, humidity and high temperatures, is 100% recyclable and is extremely easy to clean. If installed near the sea or a swimming pool, Àtria is made of AISI 316 stainless steel, a special alloy that makes it particularly suitable for environments rich in chlorine and salt, thanks to the addition of molybdenum.

Esistyle’s industrial adventure began more than 40 years ago in the Marches, the vibrant, productive, creative and entrepreneurial Italian region known for its many excellences. The brand’s strong ties to the region and to its origins is reflected in its constant quest for product excellence, which is married with a unique styles, as in the Casanova Snack outdoor kitchen, a model of elegance offering numerous high-content functional possibilities.

Gea by Steel boasts a sober, essential design which enables it to slot into any outdoor space. Available in four pre-configured solutions or modulable according to need, its marine-grade stainless steel body makes for elegance and resilience, guaranteeing exceptional durability and quality of use.

Formalia Outdoor stems from the evolution of the Formalia collection by Scavolini, and is its first kitchen designed for outdoor use. The outdoor version retains Formalia’s distinctive characteristics, adding modularity: it is composed of 19 elements that can be teamed with latest generation appliances. The aluminium structure and top with integrated sink, available in both steel and in other high-performing materials, can be paired with two different door and housing finishes – steel for a sophisticated, technical look, or Okumè plywood with teak veneer. Both solutions are highly resistant to damp, bad weather, changes of temperature and use.

Outerra's outdoor kitchen bears the name of a nymph: Dafne C 200 L. Designed by Massimo Tasca and Mattia Li Pomi, it boasts a light, minimalist aesthetic but can be implemented with boxes and accessories to cater to any need. With aluminium supports, and UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) top, the model comes complete with stainless steel sink and cooking grills. The top, on which the logs of wood or charcoal are placed, is made of refractory material, with a stainless steel frame. Also available are wooden chopping boards, sets of utensils, covers, windbreaks and a steel box, lined internally with stainless steel, which serves as a log holder.

The Tikal outdoor kitchen designed by Belluno-based architect Nicola De Pellegrini for Talenti is tinged with a new, luminous white shade and boasts a series of original accessories. Proposed in the new Tikal White finish, inspired by the majesty of Mesoamerican architecture, it vaunts a special high temperature resistant and weatherproof coating, Tikal comes with new accessories, such as the barbecue with oven and a series of equipped drawers.

Lastly, Of outdoorkitchens, a market leader in the production and conception of outdoor kitchens, has come up with Porta Maggiore, carefully designed to meet the highest possible design and practical standards. Every detail has been carefully studied, from its elegant lines to the distinctive accents of the handles integrated into the profiles of the cabinet doors and drawers. Porta Maggiore has been created with fine materials and craftsmanlike precision, rendering open air cooking a unique experience.
