The top international design awards of 2024 and the winners
An overview of the recognitions that have celebrated innovation and creativity in the design world
Certification of excellence, uniqueness of product, innovation - just some of the aims of the international awards for product design. The judging criteria varies according to category, but the aim of the awards is always to reward originality and innovation from both an aesthetic and a technical point of view. From the Compasso d’Oro design award assigned by the ADI (Association for Industrial Design), which marks its 70th anniversary this year, to the Red Dot Design Award, by way of the Good Design Award, to the ID International Forum Design, the following is a selection of the most important international prizes awarded to products and exhibitors at the Salone del Mobile.Milano that have garnered the most prestigious recognition.
The Compasso d’Oro 2024
Entrusted to the ADI (Association for Industrial Design) since 1958, now marking its seventieth anniversary and 28th edition, the Compasso d'Oro ADI is now one of the most authoritative awards for the design and creation of industrial design products. This year's edition aimed to underscore the idea of the quality of the projects that have always distinguished Italian design’s top award. Among the prominent names rewarded in this edition were Mario Cucinella for the Luigi Rovati Foundation Art Museum, Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture & Design at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and President of the SaloneSatellite Jury, the designer Piero Lissoni, awarded the Compasso d'Oro Career together with Ceramica De Maio Francesco, and Molteni&C, recognised for the D154.2 armchair designed for one of Gio Ponti's most cherished projects, the Planchart collectors' villa in Caracas in 1953-57. Gio Ponti used this armchair to explore furniture design for an international private client far removed from Italian home living tradition. Other companies receiving awards at this edition include Magis, Talenti and Elica, while Caimi Brevetti, Alpi, Dnd Martinelli, IFI, Edra and Kartell received Honourable Mentions. The late Manlio Armellini, who with FederlegnoArredo was one of the creators and promotors of the Salone del Mobile di Milano, and the designers Gaetano Pesce and Italo Rota, both of whom died in April this year, all garnered special recognition.

The award was assigned by the German Design Council, which established the award in order to identify the products that best represent the development of the entire sector on the international interior design scene.
Elle Deco International Design Awards
Vincent Van Duysen’s Palinfrasca sofa for Molteni&C won an Elle Deco International Design Award 2024 - Outdoor section. Conceived by the Belgian designer, it is part of the Italian brand’s first outdoor collection, Landmark. The use of teak pays homage to a 1994 design by Luca Meda. Rounded seats, soft furnishings and cabinet joints characterise the sofa, which is made of strips of wood. Launched in 2003, the Elle Deco International Design Awards (EDIDA) is an unmissable international event in the world of interior design, rewarding the sector’s excellence in 15 different categories. As well as the international EDIDA, some of the editions organise local events in the various countries, each with its own particular selection process to weed out the best design has to offer in 2024.
