Exhibitions When wellness meets design Text by Laura Barsottini Add to bookmarks Visionnaire, Kloster, collezione Volare, design Alessandro La Spada The importance of design in spaces devoted to wellbeing and physical and metal relaxation. A selection of products for self-care Finnish saunas, Roman baths, Turkish hammams… traditionally, physical wellbeing has always been closely bound up with the beauty of the places in which it’s pursued. Not just functional, therefore, but also harmonious. As in materials, often natural; colours, preferably neutral; shapes that aspire to extreme synthesis; spaces in which light becomes the absolute protagonist. It is these elements that make up the aesthetic and functional weft of the products dedicated to wellness from specialist companies that employ the best, most meticulous designers and the most cutting-edge technology for solutions that enable real wellness gyms to be created even in the smallest of spaces. Design and technology make up part of the overall picture in this sector, along with green-focused, extremely high levels of performance and durability. This is partly why the leading companies within the industry have for some time been setting up internal departments devoted to scientific, design and stylistic research. Wellbeing and a lifestyle that is as healthy as possible and on a human scale have been a crucial area of research for the most scrupulous designers for some while. Looking after one’s health – as we learnt during the pandemic – now involves an increasingly informed holistic mix of elements: in order to stay healthy, we need regular exercise, a healthy diet and, especially, a positive mindset. This has led to demand for the creation of pieces – from saunas to hyper - equipped benches by way of innovative devices capable of turning ordinary bicycles into indoor exercise bikes, for example – for integration into our homes in response to the growing need for relaxation and comfort.
