Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo, 3 September 1882

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is one of the most famous Dutch painter of all time. As an artist, he had a short career: just 10 years, from 1880 until his death in 1890. As a result of his great passion, in those ten years Van Gogh produced an impressive body of work. With a collection encompassing more than 200 paintings, almost 500 drawings and over 700 letters, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam brings together the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh in the world. As a painter, he was largely self-taught. With the help of textbooks, a few lessons at the art academies of Brussels and Antwerp, constant visits to museums, and advice from artist friends, he taught himself the craft and developed his own highly distinctive style of painting, made up of expressive brushstrokes and vivid colours. His style has since inspired and influenced many subsequent generations of artists.
