Ceramica Francesco De Maio, heir of an ancient tradition, is still handing on the cultural, artistic and craft heritage of Vietri ceramics. Its Master decorators, guide by their passion and professionalism, handcrafte and decorate by hand the majolica tiles to reinterpret the historical memory, innovate and create ceramic according to new tastes and design trends.
Vietri sul Mare is a small ancient village of artists located at the entrance of the wonderful Amalfi Coast. It is surrounded by the prevalence of the green colour of the coast and the blue colour of the sea. Since 1400, Vietri has been known for the production of the ancient ceramic art.
Here is where the Ceramica di Vietri by Francesco De Maio was born, in 1963.
The reference to the land of origin and, therefore, to the wonders of the Amalfi Coast and the exclusive peculiarity of its landscapes is a must to represent the artistic heritage of Ceramica Francesco De Maio.
Vietri sul Mare is a small fishing village of ancient ceramic tradition and it’s located at the entrance of the Amalfi Coast. Its proximity with the Maritime Republics of Amalfi helped to embed precious fragments into the great artistic heritage of the Vietrese ceramic production.
The smells, noises, colours of a fantastic nature, almost unreal, the scenery for the genius of a great architect. They have influenced the creation of is one of the most beautiful ceramic collections with a more current or even trendy style.
Capri, one of the most famous islands in the world. Famous for the uniqueness of its territory, the exclusivity of its hotels, the sumptuousness of its Roman villas and the magnificence of the shopping street, which ranges from haute couture, to limoncello, to ceramics, up to typical handmade sandals.

Even today, in the factory, our artisans, with passion and know-how, forge the clay and decorate by hand the majolica tiles piece by piece on the famous “White Vietri” glaze made today with an ancient recipe, handed down from father to son. Despite the changes in raw materials produced in recent years, this recipe still preserves its composition.

Handcraft knowledge and the high quality of Italian raw materials are the main points enshrined in the majolica tiles of Francesco De Maio.
The decoration is exclusively handmade, piece by piece. You can recognize the expert hand of the master decorators of the Ceramica Francesco De Maio in the decors.
The single-coloured tile is realized by the passage of a large brush that leaves irregular streaks of colour, named Pennellata (brush stroke). The stripes in different tonalities are characteristic of this way of working.
The Bianco Vietri glaze is uniformly distributed on the tiles utilizing a bell. Each glazed tile is still unfired. It passes through the hands of the master decorators or sent directly to the firing in the new high-tech plant at a temperature of about 1000° C (1.832° F).

In the factory of Ceramica Francesco De Maio, the Master decorators still today decorate by hand the majolica tiles, piece by piece.
Ceramica Francesco De Maio is the century-old heir (since 1494) of a long dynasty of ceramic artists and was born after the marriage between Vincenza Cassetta, Giuseppe’s daughter, master potter born in Vietri sul Mare, and Francesco De Maio, heir himself of an ancient traditional family specialized in the processing between the clay quarries of the handmade “Cotto” of Ogliara.
Six centuries of experience and ceramic excellence have passed by since 1494 and handed down from generation to generation from De Maio-Cassetta family, which continues nowadays in the factories of Ceramica Francesco De Maio, to promote the culture, the tradition and the Vietri art using ancient techniques of production that make these ceramics unique and prestigious.

A journey through the ceramics that starom the document attesting the sale of 50 oil pitchers made on October 3rd, 1494 by the master of the handmade terracotta Matteo Cassetta. It is an essential document certifying that since the 15th century Vietri Sul Mare, a small village located at the entrance of the beautiful Amalfi Coast, is known for producing “bone et impetenate” ceramics.

The colors of the sky and the sea of Sorrento in the Blu Ponti Collection that Gio Ponti realized between 1960 and 1962 to cover, with different combinations, the floor of the lobby and the hundred rooms at the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento, the first design hotel in the world.
The Ceramica Francesco De Maio was chosen by the Ponti’s heirs as the exclusive licensee for the re-edition of the 33 white and blue decorations and now, after almost 60 years later, produces and sells, in world exclusive, the Blue Ponti Collection.

Majolica ceramic tiles invaded by tiny dot-shaped brushstrokes, hand-painted (o hand-decorated) and inspired by the pointillism, are a ceramic collection designed by the Architect Alessandro Mendini for Ceramica Francesco De Maio, as a direct consequence of a work of art that the company realized in July 2018.
